Student Life

Life at DIU offers students a chance to experience an exceptional education in a dynamic setting. The city of Dubrovnik welcomes several million tourists each year, and hosts numerous conferences, lectures, academic events and cultural festivals. Students will truly feel that they are in an international and multicultural center. Moreover, the city allows students to explore countless museums, archeological and historical sites and stunning beaches, medieval towns and tourist destinations both within the city walls and in the surrounding region.

Activities
DIU provides its students with a wide variety of activities, from sports programs, to intercollegiate competitions, to language studies, to participation in student government, groups and organizations. As DIU has a relatively small student body, professors, administrators and students have all committed to getting to know one another outside the classroom setting, and regularly organize social events designed to strengthen bonds between all members of the DIU community. The DIU staff has helped students arrange trips, set up humanitarian groups, find employment and internships, and even coordinate basketball tournaments.

Community service
Dubrovnik International University is dedicated to serving its community and making the world around us a better place. DIU faculty, staff and students are inspired to deepen the relationship with the community and those who are in great need of our help. Our mission is not only to provide a superior education to our students, but to encourage them to participate in various community projects where they receive an opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge.

Community service in action: Dom Maslina
In the winter of 2009/2010, DIU students teamed up with the local non-profit Youth Association and a few students from the University of Dubrovnik to organize a fundraiser for “Dom Maslina,” home to children without parents.
The fundraiser was a charity sale in which students sold all sorts of goods and services.
With the funds collected from the sale, the director of “Dom Maslina,” Mrs. Ilijana Stojanović, bought the children necessary snow equipment for the upcoming winter season.
The successful completion of the humanitarian action motivated DIU students to continue giving back to the community. They have expressed the desire to personally work with the children and teachers of “Dom Maslina,” sharing their knowledge and experience with those in need. Through this special interaction, the students will obtain a deeper understanding of the DIU motto “Education today for success tomorrow.”

Community Service in action: Animal Protection action
DIU’s diverse group of students, although extremely culturally different, has managed to find a collective mission guided by the love of animals, which has brought them closer together.
For many years now, Sandra Sambrailo from Dubrovnik has been single-handedly running a shelter for abandoned animals. Guided by her unselfish love for animals, Sandra has been doing an amazing job, and openly welcomes all those who are willing to help. DIU freshmen recognized that these lovely, abandoned, and forgotten animals are in desperate need of attention, and quickly got to work in order to provide them with badly needed care and shelter.
After the visit to the shelter located in hills surrounding Dubrovnik, the students actively participated in the protest organized by the Association for Animal Protection. The protest was held in response to an order given by the local government to put down all abandoned dogs. Fortunately, to the delight of animal lovers everywhere, the protest was successful and the order revoked.
