Undergraduate Program in International Relations and Diplomacy
The contemporary world is strongly characterized by the parallel processes of globalization and integration. These processes pervade almost all areas of human activity, and as a consequence, the issues before foreign policy makers more than ever affect all people across all regions, cultures and economic lines. Matters such as terrorism, climate change and nuclear development can no longer be resolved merely by nation states, but rather require active participation from all members of the international community. Moreover, there is a growing emphasis on the importance of soft power, diplomacy and innovative global solutions in addressing military, economic and political challenges. This new global order has raised a strong interest in international affairs and has consecutively created a need for young leaders and professionals who understand the benefits and challenges of global action.
The International Relations and Diplomacy program offers a multidisciplinary approach to the constantly evolving field of international relations. The program is unique both in its emphasis on the description and study of social and political realities and in its adherence to its foundational principle that international affairs can be appreciated only through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Students consider the history and theory of international relations and diplomacy as well as a wide range of contemporary issues from globalization to international organizations and international law, to major global conflicts and negotiation efforts necessary to resolve them, to the role of civil society in global governance. Students gain knowledge about the international system and the organization, application and diplomacy, and develop essential reasoning, communication, writing and research skills necessary to succeed in the global political and academic spheres.
Upon completion of the program, students will be imparted with a deep theoretical understanding of contemporary international affairs, and will receive the tools that will enable them to critically analyze and answer current international problems and policy questions.
