SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an analytical understanding of the political and economic problems facing post-1989 Southeastern Europe in their international context. Topics covered will include historical background; the Cold War as a dividing line; the disintegration of Yugoslavia; the transition to market economy and the democratic transition in the former communist countries of the region; relations with the EU, with a special emphasis on enlargement; and regional cooperation.
