NATO AND SECURITY ORGANIZATIONS

6 ECTS credits

This course will deepen students' understanding of the concepts of peace and international security, and particularly the role of NATO in promoting and safeguarding peace and security in the global political arena. Part of the course will be dedicated to an analysis of the development, enlargement, and broadening of NATO, especially in the context of global changes such as the end of the Cold War, the fall of the Soviet Union, and the war in former Yugoslavia, and the rise in new security threats, particularly the rise of global terrorism. The course will also focus on the role NATO has played in the democratization of militaries of transitioning countries, and in civil control over militaries. Finally, special attention will be given to the concept of multilateral cooperation in the field of security, the cooperative model of collective security, and the prevention of conflicts and crises.
