DIPLOMACY

This course introduces students to the study of practical diplomacy, including diplomatic relations and principal diplomatic actors; the content and breadth of diplomatic functions; diplomatic privileges, immunities, and other rules of status; diplomatic codes of behavior; diplomatic communication; and other elements that regulate relations between international legal subjects and their representatives. The course will also present a study of special diplomatic missions; international organizations (especially the United Nations and the European Union), focusing on their diplomatic ties and functions; and multilateral diplomacy. Finally, the course will cover consular relations and consular rights as well as the international documents regulating them (including the Vienna Convention). The course will offer case-studies, including a detailed look at the diplomacy of the Republic of Dubrovnik as an example of the historical importance of diplomacy in safeguarding national interests and evolution.
